What Happens During an Interior Design Consultation? A Step-by-Step Guide
Thinking about hiring an interior designer but have no idea what happens during that first meeting?
You’re not alone.
Many homeowners picture an interior design consultation as a high-pressure meeting where someone silently critiques every paint color choice you’ve made over the last decade. We promise that’s not how it works.
At Inside Stories, our consultations are relaxed, collaborative, and actually a lot of fun. We’re not there to point out everything that’s wrong with your home. We’re there to uncover everything it could become.
Whether you’ve just bought a home, you’re planning a renovation, or you’ve reached your limit with that awkward living room layout, here’s exactly what you can expect.
STEP 1: SAY HI
Every great design starts with a conversation before a measuring tape.
Before we step foot in your home, you’ll fill out a short project form that tells us a little about you, your space, and what you’re hoping to accomplish.
Love clean, modern spaces? Dreaming of a cozy mountain retreat? Saving inspiration photos faster than you can say “Pinterest board”? Tell us all about it.
Don’t worry if you don’t know your design style. “I want it to feel warm, but also fresh…and maybe less beige?” is a perfectly acceptable answer.
The goal is simply to help us understand your vision before we meet.
STEP 2: WE COME TO YOU
Next, one of our credentialed interior designers will visit your home for a one-hour consultation.
This is where the magic (and the note-taking) begins.
We’ll walk through your space together, talk about how you live, what’s driving you crazy, and what you’d love to change.
Maybe your kitchen has enough storage for exactly three coffee mugs. Maybe your living room somehow feels both crowded and empty. Maybe your dining room has become a very expensive mail-sorting station.
We’ve seen it all.
During our visit we’ll discuss:

We’ll also take measurements, answer your questions, and start creating a game plan for your project.

STEP 3: WE HEAD BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD
Once we’ve gathered all the details, it’s our turn to do the heavy lifting.
Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll create a custom design that’s built around your home, your lifestyle, and your budget.
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all design pulled from the latest trend report.
Every layout, furnishing, finish, and material is selected specifically for your space. We spend a lot of time making sure every detail works together so you don’t have to wonder whether that rug actually goes with the sofa.

STEP 4: SEE YOUR VISION COME TO LIFE
When your design is ready, we’ll present a personalized plan that shows exactly how everything comes together.
